Michigan got over a major hurdle when it knocked off Ohio State last week. It was the Wolverines’ first win over the Buckeyes since 2011 and the first of Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh’s tenure.
But with a loss to Iowa on Saturday in the Big Ten title game, the win over Ohio State would suddenly have far less meaning. It would once again be symbolic of Michigan reaching a major hill and failing to clear it, something that has plagued the maize and blue since Harbaugh’s arrival.

However, this is certainly one of the best teams Harbaugh has fielded in his return back to Ann Arbor. The Wolverines, like the Hawkeyes, have been known for strong running games and defense this season. In fact, it’s likely the best player on the field for both teams won’t be a quarterback.
For Michigan, it will likely be defensive end Aidan Hutchinson or linebacker David Ojabo leading the charge for the Wolverines’ defense. Hutchinson registered three sacks against Ohio State and is now the Wolverines’ single-season record holder in that category. Ojabo, meanwhile, provides a nice complement, with 11 tackles for loss and 11 sacks as well.

But Iowa’s offensive line boasts Tyler Linderbaum, the nation’s top center. He’ll likely be tasked with creating holes for star running back Tyler Goodson while Michigan’s offensive line will have to do the same for Hassan Haskins. Haskins scored five touchdowns against Ohio State.
This game is a must win for Michigan and could help define Harbaugh’s legacy at his alma mater. An Iowa win, however, likely keeps the Big Ten out of the playoff altogether.

9:35 p.m.: After the review, no targeting against the Wolverines. Remains third-and-17 from the 38 for the Hawkeyes.
9:32 p.m.: The previous play with the hold against Iowa is under review, potentially for targeting against Michigan.
9:31 p.m.: On third-and-7, Petras takes off and scrambles for 10 yards and takes a nasty hit at the end. But it comes back for an offensive holding. Now third-and-17 from the Iowa 38 for the Hawkeyes.
9:29 p.m.: Iowa regains possession at their own 45.
9:24 p.m.: A quick and uninspiring drive for the Wolverines. They go three-and-out from their own 3 and will punt it away, but Michigan calls a timeout first.
9:23 p.m.: Michigan takes over at its own 3 to start this drive.
9:18 p.m.: It’s now third-and-8 following a 4 yard gain from Tyler Goodson. Hawkeyes are now just 1-of-7 on third down on the day. The Hawkeyes punt from the Michigan 44.
9:17 p.m.: Petras completes it to Charlie Jones for 13 to put Iowa across midfield to the Michigan 46.
9:15 p.m.: Michigan will punt it away too as the Wolverines started that drive at their own 6. Iowa takes over at its own 40 after a loss of 7 for Iowa on the return.
9:10 p.m.: Iowa unsurprisingly punts it away after gaining 7 yards on third down. MIchigan takes over at its own 6 following the punt.
9:09 p.m.: The Hawkeyes get hit with a big penalty of their own, driving them back 15. It’s now third-and-20 from their own 40.
9:06 p.m.: Iowa starts the second quarter looking at third-and-8 but an unsportsmanlike against Michigan moves the Hawkeyes up to midfield.
End first quarter: Michigan 14, Iowa 3
9:00 p.m.: INTERCEPTION IOWA. The Hawkeyes continue to lead the nation in interceptions as McNamara’s pass is tipped to Jack Campbell, stifling any Michigan momentum from the big run. Hakweyes take over at their 33 with 17 seconds left in the first.
8:59 p.m.: Following the field goal, Michigan gets another big running play, this one a 29-yard run for AJ Henning to the Michigan 46.
8:56 p.m.: FIELD GOAL IOWA. The Hawkeyes do indeed get on the board with a 22-yard chip shot to make it an 11-point game. Michigan 14, Iowa 3 with 1:26 left in the first.
8:54 p.m.: Iowa picks up a big gain as Petras hits Charlie Jones for 28 to the Michigan 9. Hawkeyes marching here but need points after Michigan’s 1-play TD drive last time out.
8:53 p.m.: On third-and-7, Iowa converts easily as Petras hits LaPorta again. Gain of 10 and the Hawkeyes are at the Michigan 40.
8:52 p.m.: Petras hits Luke Lachey for 22 yards to the Iowa 47. A gain of three puts the Hawkeyes at midfield exactly. Third-and-7 from the 50 upcoming.
8:49 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN MICHIGAN. On the first play of the drive, Michigan dials up the flea flicker as Donovan Edwards launches a 75-yard bomb to Roman Wilson to make it a two score game. Edwards, a running back, displays impressive arm talent and hits Wilson in stride. Michigan 14, Iowa 0 with 5:27 left.
8:45 p.m.: The Hawkeyes go three-and-out as Tory Taylor punts it away and Michigan takes over at the 25 looking to expand its lead.
8:43 p.m.: Iowa takes over at its own 25 following the touchdown. They reached the Michigan 15 last drive, but missed a 33-yard field goal that would’ve put them up 3-0.
8:35 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN MICHIGAN. Jim Harbaugh calls on Blake Corum as a change of pace back and it pays off as he takes it 67 yards to the house for the score. Backup QB JJ McCarthy serves as the lead blocker. Michigan 7, Iowa 0 with 6:38 left in the first.
8:34 p.m.: Michigan starts its second drive of the game at its own 20 but is quickly staring at third-and-3 from the 27 and the Wolverines convert. Cade McNamara hits Donovan Edwards out of the backfield for 6 yards.
8:29 p.m.: Iowa gets to the Michigan 15 but after a three-and-out, opts to kick the 33-yard field goal only to miss wide right. Remains a tie game at 0-0 and the Wolverines catch a big break on Iowa’s opening drive.
8:27 p.m.: Petras hits LaPorta again, this time for 21. Iowa’s known for its tight ends, and LaPorta is just the latest in a long line of successful ones. Now first-and-10 for the Hawkeyes from the 17.
8:25 p.m.: On third-and-7, Petras airs it out downfield and it falls complete, but Michigan gets hit for a defensive pass interference. Moves the Hawkeyes up to the Michigan 40 now looking at first-and-10.
8:23 p.m.: Spencer Petras hits tight end Sam LaPorta for 15 yards and then running back Tyler Goodson takes it for 2. Hawkeyes nearing midfield, looking at second-and-8 from their own 43.
