Howie Kussoy picks his winner for Friday night’s college football matchups between Utah and Colorado and East Carolina and Cincinnati. Home team in CAPS.

UTAH (-23.5) over Colorado

The Utes only re-entered the national consciousness with their blowout of Oregon, but Kyle Whittingham’s crew has won seven of its past eight games, averaging more than 38 points per game. The Buffaloes have lost each of their four road games by at least 22 points, and their 107th-ranked run defense now faces the second-best ground game (5.7 yards per carry) in the country.

EAST CAROLINA (+14) over Cincinnati

The Bearcats have answered the bell whenever a game has been circled on the schedule (Notre Dame, SMU), but they’ve stumbled when blowouts were needed to enhance their résumé. The Pirates are balanced and explosive and a bigger threat to the perfect season than the spread suggests, having taken 10-1 Houston to overtime.
