Stephen Curry’s scoring explosion during Golden State’s win against the Clippers Sunday was fueled by a heated technical with 9:07 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Warriors point guard went off, scoring 11 of his 33 points after the incident, to go with five rebounds, six assists and six steals. Three of his seven triples came during his post-technical hot streak.
At one point, Curry poked fun at the incident and gestured a “T” after knocking down a contested corner three.
Curry was furious when he didn’t draw a foul on a drive to the basket after L.A’s Terrance Mann appeared to make contact.
He fell to the floor and quickly shot up to angrily approach the ref over the non-call, and was held back by Warriors forward Juan Toscano-Anderson.
“It was just an accumulation of all types of weird stuff. All that led into where I thought I got a foul,” Curry said after the 105-90 win over the Clippers.
The game was already getting chippy between both teams, and Curry admittedly “let my emotions go.”
“And definitely fired me up, fired our team up — you have to be able to direct that energy into just putting the ball in the basket, obviously, after that,” he said. “So that’s where I feel like we do it well, where you don’t let it become a distraction for the rest of the game, and it obviously helped open up the game.”
Warriors coach Steve Kerr said, “That was as upset as I’ve seen him and that I have been in a long time,” adding, “He clearly got fouled.”
Forward Draymond Green said he knew Curry’s scoring surge was coming.
“You saw the flurry coming. I was telling Jordan Poole over there, ‘He’s about to put this one up.’ He started putting them up. It was good to watch,” Green said about Curry, who’s averaging 28.4 points a game this season.
The win marked Golden State’s eighth straight victory in a hot start to the season. The Warriors are still without Curry’s fellow Splash Brother Klay Thompson (right Achilles tendon injury recovery) and 2020 No. 2 draft pick James Wiseman (right knee injury recovery).
Both players were assigned to Golden State’s G-League Santa Cruz on Sunday, as they work their way back to the lineup.
The 18-2 Warriors visit the 17-3 Suns on Tuesday night.
