The Roadrunners have their first defeat of the season behind them and fell 45:23 against North Texas on November 27th. UTSA gave up a total of 456 yards in defense and a whopping 340 yards on the ground in the one-sided loss that seemed nowhere to be out of the game. UTSA fiddled three times after losing just four all season in an unusually sloppy performance.
“I’m so mad and mad right now. I feel nothing but pain and frustration, “said UTSA head coach Jeff Traylor of the loss on Monday. “I just don’t want to let anyone down, my staff and my players. We want to play Good Friday. Now there is my frustration that we didn’t make it on Saturday. … Nobody wanted to remain unbeaten than us. So that hurts a lot. But we still have everything we can play for. “
Now the Roadrunners will be put to the test again as they face a squad from Western Kentucky who averages 43.3 points and 525.1 yards per offensive game with the Conference USA Championship.
“They are just really good. They really are, ”said Traylor about the WKU. “That quarterback, I told you how good he is. We don’t know how to stop them, nobody does. If you have a good idea, please let me know because nobody else has one that has a job. “
“That quarterback” – WKU’s Bailey Zappe – has 4,968 yards of passing, 52 TDs, and nine interceptions in the season, and he leads a team from Western Kentucky that has won seven straight games. Last time the Hilltoppers lost? When they fell against the Roadrunners on October 9th.
UTSA defeated the Hilltoppers 52-46 in this game that WKU players will remember freshly.
“We felt like they did what they wanted,” said Juwan Jones, the defensive end of Western Kentucky, of that first meeting. “They had 200 rushing yards and the quarterback had a total of seven touchdowns and six through the air. This is kind of embarrassing and you take it personally. This week it’s personal and we’re going out there to stop the run and when it’s third place, the money is down, we’ll come after the quarterback, make sales and get the ball back on offense. “
This was going to be another high scores match and the last team with the ball could very likely emerge victorious.
